The Improvement of Maize (Zea mays L.) for Drought Stress Tolerance

نویسندگان

چکیده

Maize is one of the important cereals in world after rice and wheat. It grown for grain as well fodder tropical, sub-tropical temperate regions World. The reduction maize productivity under drought stress conditions depends on different factors such plant development stage, intensity duration water deficit, varietal sensitivity to stress. Drought major constraints agriculture where limited availability crop irrigation causes a carbon fixation by photosynthetic apparatus that result net yield losses. Plant breeders desire novel more accurate tools fast-track breeding programs required increasing demands food because farmers are facing changing climate which has impacts damages globally. Crop loss, stress, huge impact industry economy. Therefore, prevent economic loss make plants tolerant variety approaches conventional molecular/ genetic engineering being practiced. Evaluation of oxidative stress tolerance in maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings in response to drought.

Seedlings of selected six genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.) differing in their drought sensitivity (LM5 and Parkash drought-tolerant and PMH2, JH3459, Paras and LM14 as drought-sensitive) were exposed to 72 h drought stress at two leaf stage. Alterations in their antioxidant pools combined with activities of enzymes involved in defense against oxidative stress were investigated in leaves. Activi...

Maize (Zea mays L.).

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is an effective method for introducing genes into maize. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol for genetic transformation of the maize genotype Hi II. Our starting plant material is immature embryos cocultivated with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a standard binary vector. In addition to step-by-step laboratory transformation proced...

Root cortical aerenchyma improves the drought tolerance of maize (Zea mays L.).

Root cortical aerenchyma (RCA) reduces root respiration in maize by converting living cortical tissue to air volume. We hypothesized that RCA increases drought tolerance by reducing root metabolic costs, permitting greater root growth and water acquisition from drying soil. To test this hypothesis, recombinant inbred lines with high and low RCA were observed under water stress in the field and ...

Association Mapping for Enhancing Maize (Zea mays L.) Genetic Improvement

Association mapping through linkage disequilibrium (LD) analysis is a powerful tool for the dissection of complex agronomic traits and for the identifi cation of alleles that can contribute to the enhancement of a target trait. With the developments of high throughput genotyping techniques and advanced statistical approaches as well as the assembling and characterization of multiple association...

Overexpression of Arabidopsis Molybdenum Cofactor Sulfurase Gene Confers Drought Tolerance in Maize (Zea mays L.)

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a key component of the signaling system that integrates plant adaptive responses to abiotic stress. Overexpression of Arabidopsis molybdenum cofactor sulfurase gene (LOS5) in maize markedly enhanced the expression of ZmAO and aldehyde oxidase (AO) activity, leading to ABA accumulation and increased drought tolerance. Transgenic maize (Zea mays L.) exhibited the expected r...
